Action- 
Bacteriostatic

P/D– Stops protein synthesis of bacteria and hence stops bacterial multiplication.
Chloramphenicol is a broad spectrum antibiotic that is effective against a variety of susceptible and serious bacterial infections.

Route of administration-

•Oral route

•Intravenous route

•Injection route

Contraindications- 

•Not used in neonates

•Avoid during breast feeding 

•Hypersensitivity

Adverse effects- 

Bone marrow toxicity- Risk of aplastic Anemia , leukaemia

•Collapse of cardiovascular system- This occurs specially in neonates and may lead to grey baby syndrome
Basically chloramphenicol is a good drug but is not used frequently because of its high risk bone marrow toxicity.

Uses-

•Chloramphenicol is more effective against gram negative bacteria
•They are less effective against gram positive bacteria
•They can’t act against atypical bacteria,so it is useless to use chloramphenicol in a person affected with atypical bacterial infection.

We mainly use chloramphenicol against gram negative bacteria like-

Bordetela pertusis- it causes whooping cough (pertusis)

Haemophilus influenzae- causing meningitis

Salmonella typhi- causes typhoid
